My Father and I have always loved catchign shad at the Bonneville Dam. Some years we drove all the way from Tacoma and caught nothing. The hardest part was getting there at the right time when the most shad were coming up river. So then through the years we took it by ear by asking people how it was. During all that time I have no idea why I didn't bother to look online to see if I could find out the fish count for the number of shad swimming up river.
So I did that and saw that the shad count went from about 2000 to 4000 in a day.
Now that My parents live down in Vancouver, it's only about a 1 hour drive now instead of 3 hours.
So my Father and I decided to try it out for a little bit.
We only had about an hour and a half to fish but we were glad we went.
My dad ended up catching two and I ended up catching 3.
My dad caught 1 female and 1 male while I caught 1 Female and 2 males.
Both of the females were pretty big!
I would guesstimate roughly 4 lbs or so.
We were just using Shad Darts that were red tipped with a green / chartreuse body.
