Foggy and icy but got in the water about 0730 fished until 1430. Three of us caught over 30 peamouths, great for smoking and canning. This is a great place to teach a kid how to drift fishing. Whitefish fly and a maggot. Maggots are hard to find but we found those power bait maggot looking things worked just as well. Hope this helps anyone interested in this fishery.

Pikeminnows? There be a bounty on them (www.pikeminnow.org/)! A 20" Pikeminnow can eat an awful lot of salmon fry...

Whitefish not pike minnow or the pea mouth chub. That's just what my dad used to call them 50yrs ago and it just stuck, sorry for the confusion.

I keep hearing about whitefish flies. What are they? The guys at the fly shops just scoff at the idea of catching whitefish on purpose! They did say the bead head Prince nymph was really "bothered" by the whitefish when they were trying to catch the revered trout. Looks to me like a great fishery; why not?

went down to Vernita in the mid 80's with a guide to catch some whitefish. realed in the first one and I said damn a peemouth. the guide said that was a whitefish and that,s what we are down here for. now I thought I was going down to catch the type of whitefish you catch atBanks Lake. two different critters. The peemouth is a mountain whitefish and the nice ones you catch at banks lake are Lake Whitefish. Back in the 60 & 70's you used to catch the peemouth by the dozens down at Lincoln, step on them and about 1/3 of them had tape worm in them and then use the tape worm for trout. worked well!

yes up the San. poil they are in hawk creek also. I have under water camera and one fall a few years ago I was marking tons of fish but couldn't catch. took camera down and spent long time but finally saw them on point of moonshine bay. my thoughts in the fall above the Spokane bridge when all those fish stack up in the slide area are lake whitefish. that's how they stack up the San poil.
