It was an honor yesterday to fish Lake Roosevelt out of Spring Canyon with very good friend and mentor, Dr. Allan T. Scholz, recently retired and famed EWU Fisheries professor influential in establishing the quality fishery occurring in Lake Roosevelt and elsewhere. Also joining was Elliot Kittel, a Lake Roosevelt Fisheries Biologist some day to be famed as well I'm sure as he's very passionate about his profession and doing great things for Lake Roosevelt Fisheries. With these two on board great conversation was equally matched by great fishing. While targeting kokanee we landed 8 beautiful trout of which 5 were wild and released, and easy limits of kokanee approx 14 inches. Well almost easy limits as we started out 0 for 5 which led me to bring out a noodle rod for the light lipped kokes. Pink squid/hootchie was the hot lure for the day fished surface and on down to 22 feet. Interesting, one week its the flies, next apexes, last week it was wee-tads and yesterday squids. Also, usually a very short leader, like 10" or less to entice the kokes but yesterday it was 20" behind sling blades. Met a great guy at the boat launch, "Kalama Jim", for the second time this season who travels all the way from the west side to fish this fishery. What a great guy with zest for life and exuberant attitude. Thanks for your perspectives and pink squid tip.... Look forward to seeing you again Jim.
