This is a combined report for the 6th and 7th.
My brother and sister in law came east to spend the weekend with us at Roosevelt. My wife had to work Friday, so the rest of us headed up late morning. Arrived, got settled in and situated, then pulled the boat out and headed to the ramp. Since it was so hot, and mid-afternoon, we just went for a boat ride.
After dinner Friday evening, my brother and I walked down the bank to fish for walleye. We caught several small rainbow, all of which were sent back to grow bigger. We were pitching crankbaits and they seemed effective. I hung up and lost mine but it was too dark to see to tie another on, so I just watched the bats as they skimmed the water surface eating bugs. My brother continued fishing. It was getting late, maybe 9:45 and he had not yet hooked up with a walleye, something he had never caught before. We were talking about calling it, and he hooked up with something that pulled a lot more than the pesky little 'bows. He brought it to the bank and I grabbed a nice 17 or 18" walleye. Cross that off your bucket list Ken. ;-)
We stayed a short while longer, then hoofed it up the path, filleted the 'eye, and headed for bed.
Saturday we had breakfast around 8am and visited with our hosts until well after 9 then helped with a few chores before pulling the boat out of the barn about 10:30. I decided to head toward the dam and try our luck for kokanee and rainbow. We motored over near the dam then set up to work the shoreline above Geezer Beach. I rigged the downriggers with a pink Apex on one side and the other with a whitish hootchie (all I had). Ken caught a 14" 'bow that went in the cooler then a couple more that went back to grow some more. It was slow, and very hot, but we were getting some interest in what we had out. Last fish before we headed back to Seven Bays was a chunky 15" kokanee, so Ken crossed off another bucket list item.
We motored back to Seven Bays and joined our hosts for a great meal before Ken and his wife Traci joined me on the trek to the beach in search of more walleye. We started hooking up right away, I caught rainbow, small 'eyes, a couple short SMB, and finally, a decent 17" walleye. I relinquished my rod to Ken while his wife plied the water with the other spinning outfit. Though she had several hits, just wasn't able to hook up. Ken managed a skinny 16 inch walleye that joined mine on the stringer. We finally called it a night just after 10pm.
Sunday was departure day, so we packed up prior to breakfast, and hit the water right afterward. I set up to troll between Seven Bays and the confluence. The goal was to get Traci on some fish. We succeeded and she put two pan sized ones in the cooler before we had to pull up and head back to the ramp.
I ran the downriggers at 30' with the gear 50' back from the ball. Used the same gear as Saturday and the only action was on the downrigger setups. We also trolled leaded line with flies 175' back but no joy on either one.
Nothing stellar by any means, but still caught some fish, Ken caught his first ever walleye and kokanee, and we all had a great weekend at the lake. :-)
