It looked like it was just going to be a nice day on the water but just after noon it got a little better.
The wife and I took the 2 Grandkids down to Spring Canyon yesterday and while it was a beautiful day and a very welcome change to the cold and wind that I have run into on my previous February trips the fishing remained slow. Got lines in the water just after nine and only managed 1 take down before noon. Just after 12 with both kids napping the downrigger rod started to bounce. Turned out to be one of the chuckiest Kokes I have caught all year. Probably only 19" but built somewhat like a trip. A few minutes later we had a drive by on one rod and then hooked up on another. By now the Grandson is fully awake and lands a nice rainbow. Looks like the bite might be on but guess what's next. Granddaughter needs to use the restroom. Talk about a conflicted Grandfather. Lucky for KaitE her Grandmother is along. We got back out and eventually KaitE got a nice bow and Sawyer picked up a decent Koke. While the water was calm we really never spotted any jumping at all. Tried various speeds and offerings but hooked up at around 1.7 mph and 3 of the 4 fish were caught on my standard orange Kekeda flies which is about the year long average for the Tin Guppy. I figure we were fishing 10-15ft deep. Think we got 2 on the downrigger at 10, 1 on leaded line back 175ft and 1 on mono with a banana weight way back there. Talked with a couple of other boats and it was slow for them also.
Remain confident that the bite will be on next time. March here we come, look out fish!
