My brother invited me out on his boat today so I could give him a Kokanee refresher course and get his boat bloody. His 4 year old was eager to catch a fish, so we grabbed Grandpa and headed down to Roosevelt with 3 generations in the rig. I finally convinced my dad and brother to get a 2 pole endorsement, but with a 4 year old aboard I decided to only run 5 rods. Thanks to Mauk Fishing Stuff I was able to bring 60 dodgers along with in a well organized manner. It makes life a lot easier when all your gear is in one place .
Fish number one hit right away, but was a rainbow. Fish #2 was a big small mouth. 20 minutes later we nailed our first Kokanee. It was fun watching Grandpa and Grandson tussle with the largest koke of the day. Also good to see another monster kokanee fall victim to my own hand tied flies.
My brother's boat is not equipped to run planer boards, so we ran the next best thing. 12'4" rods which increased our spread to 30'. It was a blast watching these kokes slam the big rods and bend them to the water. As the day wore on, we had to go a little deeper to find the bitters , but we eventually did, landing our limits.
I have enjoyed showing a good number of folk a good time at Roosevelt. Thanks to all of you that have kept me busy this winter-spring. I'm also thankful the kokes keep biting and have produced limits for almost every trip. I hope more of you will join me soon, because you never know when the fun will end.
Today's tidbit. If you are missing bites it's probably because your hook are dull. Some hooks are dull from the factory. A hook should scratch your finger nail when you slide it across it. If it just slides across without scratching it, it's dull. Always check your hooks. You don't want to miss out on that fish of a lifetime.
