Well three of us decided to fish out of Spring Canyon again today. The water was calm and from a vantage point I could see fish rising all over the lake just about as far as I could see. I took note of the areas the jumpers were concentrated and then continued down the hill to the launch.

The bite was hot from the start which made for a great day to experiment. We made a rule that once you caught a fish on a lure, that lure had to be retired. This forced us to use lures that we always wanted to try, but never got around to it. These kokes are hitting plugs, spinners, flies, and spoons in orange, pink, chartreuse, and probably many other colors I never get around to try. It didn't take too long to catch our kokes, so we decided to stay and fish for bows. This mainly resulted in hooking up with more (unwanted at this point) pesky kokanee, but did yield 4 rainbows to add to our catch. What a fun and beautiful day on the water. These fish are putting up more of a fight now that the water is warming a bit. What fun it is to see these fish go airborne during the fight.

This year is hands down the best Kokanee year on Roosevelt in over 10 years. I would also venture to say it's producing the biggest kokes in the northwest. I hope to have an opportunity to share this great fishery with more of you in the near future. Leave the hassles up to me. Just jump in the car and into my boat, and join me on a kokanee adventure. Possibly the best of your lifetime.

Great report Dave. Sure was a fun day and scenery was terrific to boot. First time I can say we released Kokes to catch bows. What a treat this fishery is. Very blessed.

Thanks for the report Dave. Haven't been down for a couple weeks and was wondering what is going on. Always enjoy your reports.

I believe I counted 5 rods on one side of the boat, that's more of a mystery to me than actually catching the fish. I would wind up spending all my time untangling lines. Seems like maybe 3 of those rods were white. Is that the Lamiglas Kokanee special I have heard about? I have a couple of new dodgers I want to try, I better get down there. Keep banging them out. Love your reports, they help keep me making the long drive down.

Part-Time, one of the 5 rods were not being utilized at the time. I was running three out on the planer board and one on the downrigger. It only gets chaotic if all the rods hook up at the same time. White rods are the Lamiglass and the brown ones are Okuma's koke Rod. They are a blast on these big fish.

Kokanee are extremely vulnerable stressing out and mortality when catching and releasing....just saying

Apex, I agree with you 100%. That is why I make every effort not to catch kokes after we limit on them. I change out my tackle to target rainbows, change my bait to worms, move locations, and speed up my troll all in order to reduce the chances of catching more kokes. In addition I don't use treble stinger hooks at all. I am not the guy who tries to catch big numbers of kokes for the fun of it. I am after limits and then it's on to another species. I will take any lure suggestions you may have that is guaranteed to only catch rainbows. It would make my job a lot more simple.
