As you know from other reports, this fall has been excellent rainbow fishing at Roosevelt. The key to success is finding them. Most of our fish have been caught in the top 15 feet of the water column using mostly flies and rapalas. I also have been chasing marks with my downrigger at depths of 30 to 50 feet with great success. At first I wasn't sure if these fish were rainbows, but it turns out they are and they too are hungry.

I have been fortunate enough to find a couple of small pockets of carryovers. The action isn't as fast, but the size of these fish makes the wait worth it. My crew had a blast battling these brutes on my lightweight Kokanee gear. All of our fish were hatcheries with the largest measuring 22 inches. My guest told me this was the best rainbow fishing they have seen in the lower 48. I can't take credit for the fish but was happy to provide them with a great day on the water and share an amazing resource with them.

I thought I would share a picture of my latest planer board release modification and the lures I've been using. I added a bit of webbing to increase visibility on the releases. They work great, and the added length even helps to telegraph the bite to the rod.
