Thursday eve my cousin called me to see if I wanted to try for the channels down at Lyons ferry and I rarely turn down a trip down there. We got there Sat morning and tried up the Palouse mouth first thing and caught a couple of bulleads and a couple of small channels so we headed down below the hatchery, a great move.
The first fish we caught was not a Cat but a small Sturgeon. The second fish was a nice bright hen steelhead and then another hen steelhead (both around 12-14lbs) and then finally a nice Channel at 10lbs then a few more cats between 3.5 to 7lbs then we had a king on for a few but once he saw the boat he whent down and got wrapped around something and got off. Between Sat and this morning we hooked into 7 Steelhead, 1 Fall King, 2 Sturgeon ( both undersize ) 1 4lb Walleye and 15 Cats. The biggest suprise was no Smallmouths.
All on sucker meat, anchored in 30ft of water a couple of hundred yards down stream of the hatchery. Our setup is an 7 ft ugly stick w/ 12lb fire line one 1/16 split shot a swivel and a 6ft 10lb mono leader w/ a single hook. Our sucker meat was cut into 1/2'' by 4'' strips from the belly meat. Thw way we fish this setup is let out about 25' of line and let the current move it from our stationary spot.
I have the fever for the Steelhead season now.
