As I promised, I went down the snake with a friend and wasted my money. No fish no bites! after thinking this might trun out to be one of the best seasons down there now I would half to aboutface. No one was having any luck.

I have a question gentlemen. I had two people try to tell me it closes for Sturgeon on the 28th
of april this year in an emergency closure. Then I had another person tell me no you just have to fish with a 5/8 or smaller hook from tip to shank, because of the Salmon run. Alright I have tried to get info on the web and even called the wdfw and no strait answers. anybody of authority know anything about this?

If this is true it wouldn't be worth fishing here the rest of the year. As soon as the Salmon are done running the Sturgeon go deep, due to the warmer temps.

Wow! I thought for sure I would get some answers. I guess I will have to wait to see what new regs states. A buddie told me he had heard the same thing about the 5/8 hook rule, but nothing on the closure. The thing that irritates me the most is it does not open for Salmon in that stretch of water. It is open several miles above and several miles below that area.

That's lame. I am planning on going this weekend. My brother in law caught one last saturday but was oversized. Hope they don't do that because that will ruin my summer.

Didnt see anything where it says its closed and here is the statement from WDFW's website under emergency regulations for the Snake River. In addition, anglers fishing for all species in these areas of the Snake River during the salmon fishery must use barbless hooks only. Night closure in effect for salmon and sturgeon, and it shall be unlawful to use any hook larger than 5/8 inch (point of hook to shank) when fishing for all species except sturgeon. Anglers cannot remove any chinook or steelhead from the water unless it is retained as part of the daily bag limit. So it doesnt effect Sturgeon hooks.

My friend, I went down Sunday with and my brother went down this morning and just called me (2:00pm) to say they are on there way back with a keeper. They claim the bite is on and the water came up about 2' and muddied up some. They also claim they released four oversized fish all on caught on the north side near the rock point by the portapoti below the dam. It figures! I am going to take the day off and give it a try tomarrow afterall, what the hell!

Yankin Jaw mostly trout but read my coming report it did not seem to matter. What did seem to matter is where to drop the line. In the warmer slack water at the edges of current. Normally I get mine in moderate to heavy current. Must be the temp in that water, atleast that would be my guess.

Hey sturgeoneater do you think its too swift to ancore up a boat on the south shore below the dead line. I've done that along time ago and had some good bites. Do you think smelt would work. I used it alot way back before the damns were on the snake.

As it was today you could, anchor out there as the runoff runs more it could get harry though. The current was stronger today then last weekend and up some. Right now it did not make a difference what we used my brother caught a 7' this morning on pickled herring. Today it was all in putting that bait right at the edge of a current near the south side slack water. They should be putting up todays report anytime. And after a day like today I am crashing man ttyal.
P.S. I use to use smelt also. but trout is the one I can always count on, crappie is also a good one.
