What a great day for fishing, from our living room window I watched a Spey Flyfisherman land a nice Steelhead, then saw a boat fisherman land one. There is a lot of Steelhead in the river.

We opted for the evening fishing, today is a Saturday so a lot of fisherman have been out since early dawn, and are pretty much fished out by 3:00pm and later, There was not a single boat in the area we were fishing, except ours.

We launched at Couse Creek and travelrd upriver about five miles to a really nice drift. Decided to try a old standby plug we have not used for a while, the Hawg Boss, in orange and red. Get the plugs scented with a concotion that I mix up, engage the TR-1 Autopilot and start a slow backtroll.

Have not gone more than twenty yards when Barb's rod slams down, she yells "I've got one", and the fight is on. The fish makes a couple of good runs, stays deep and never breaks water, after about ten minutes I slide the net under a beautiful buck that is aroud six pounds.

We go back to the start of the drift for another pass, after about 30 minutes my rod goes down, and this Steelhead is stripping line non stop, then comes blasting out of the water, then strips out more line headed downstream, jumps several more times. I then start to gain line, this fish was out at least a hundred yards, I can feel it rolling, and am thinking the leader might fail. Well we finally get it to the boatand Barb net her, she is a beautiful bright wild hen, around ten pounds. There is not a hook in the fish, she has rolled the leader around herself, and it had then tangled with the plug, like she was lassoed, when I cut the leader to the plug she just popped free. Barb took a picture of her in the net, gorgeous fish.

We had two more take downs, but did not land them, about three hours and four fish on, pretty exciting evening for us. It was a sunny day, but the canyon starts to darken early now, even when you can see the sun high on the canyon walls. River temp. was around 53*, no wind. Just very, very nice

Thanks for another great report! "from our living room window I watched a Spey Flyfisherman land a nice Steelhead, then saw a boat fisherman land one."....."There was not a single boat in the area we were fishing, except ours." You two are an inspiration and your reports are exactly why I stuff every cent I can into my retirement fund! If we ever cross paths it will be an honor.
