This report is for Lower Holter Lake

I got to fish with my son Matt this weekend. Hooked up my 15 foot Klamath so we could try a couple lakes this year. We decided to fish lower Holter lake (actually it's a reservoir of the Missouri River). The lake holds a variety of fish, what we decided to concentrate on were walleye.

We launched at the state park closest to the dam and scooted over to the far side of the dam. Having never fished a body of water and knowing very little about it was challenging. I decided we would go with worm harnesses and bottom walkers, hitting flats in 15-30 feet of water. On a whim I decided to check my Navionics App and was thrilled to find that it had a contour map for this lake. Now we were in business! I found several potential locations and we got to work.

On our second location Matt's rod doubled over and he was in to a great fish - but not a walleye. A beautiful rainbow had slammed his gear and was doing somersaults in a desperate attempt to get away. This lake has some huge rainbows and we found a good one. It was a 18" a solid fish (that later cut up a deep red fleshed color). Off to a good start.

We worked our way through a few good looking spots but no action from the walleye. We did catch some nice perch. Finally, working back toward launch on the east side of the lake in 17 feet of water Matt's rod doubled over, the sign of a big fish. This was Matt's first ever walleye and was pretty excited. I was thrilled to see land a solid 22" walleye!

That was it for the day. Slow fishing, with a couple quality fish thrown in for the excitement. Lower Holter is a beautiful lake and I'll be back!
