Took my lovely bride, Boni, to Tye Lake to try for some more Rainbows. Arrived about 6:00 AM, skies cloudy/foggy and a chilly 43 degrees at the outset. Water temp at 53 degrees at the shoreline. One fisherman already at the beach. Began with Power Eggs on one rig, fl. orange (3' leader), worms under a float for Boni, and I tried casting a green Roostertail (It had worked well for me previous week). Had no action at all for the first two hours... tried several colors of PEs and different lengths of leaders, but came up empty. Nothing on several Roostertails and small spoons/spinners. By about 8:30 the fog began to burn off and for a while the sun began to warm us up, and the fish began to bite the worms. Mostly just nibbles with the float bobbling a bit, then reeling in a bitten worm. Finally, about 9:00, Boni was able to hook into a nice 12" Rainbow which she expertly landed. I switched my casting rig to a float and worm rig and began to have bites as well. The fish were definitely not aggressive, just nibbles and chewing on the worms, but in the next three hours, Boni landed two more Rainbows and I caught two more. Final tally, Boni three, me two (I'll never hear the end of it!). Nice chunky Rainbows, from 10" to 12". Left the lake about 12:30.
Saw perhaps two dozen other fisherman, many came and left without any fish, but saw perhaps twelve other fish caught. Some appeared to be fishing Power Eggs off the bottom, but I had no luck that way... most fish I saw caught were under a float. Did see three small boats/rafts go into the water and they were trolling flies and it appeared that they were having success.
Big mama goose was still on her nest within ten feet of our position on the beach. Big beautiful Great Blue Heron landed nearby, looking for breakfast, before being run off by the protecting gander, keeping his mate safe.
All in all, a great day out with my wife, caught a few fish and smoked a couple bowls of my favorite pipe tobacco and enjoyed observing nature at its best. PTL!
