My wife and daughter went to Portland to meet up with her other daughter for a Mom's weekend out. That left me home looking at a rainy, windy unsettled weather forecast trying to figure out when I might get out. Got up Saturday morning to a beautiful day; hmmmm? No corn cured and no one who could go along. Called Captain Dave, hey you got any corn cured? Ya come on by and I just got some new kokanee flies from Arctic Fox that you might give a whirl on Hayden.
Swung by Captain Dave's and picked up the "goodies" and headed to Hayden. Driving across the Rathdrum Prairie I could see a very nasty rain storm over Hayden Lake; not good. Decided to stop by and see some friends at a boat dealer up there. Shouldn't do that but....
Finally got on the lake around 2 , the weather was really unsettled. Rain, wind, clouds, spots of sunshine. In short not the easiest time to fish by yourself. Rigged up with Orange dodger and one of the new arctic Fox flies in orange. Nice looking fly; we'll see how it works. Sent it back three colors on the Lead core and set up the downrigger with another offering in pink. Ran the DR at 45' and speed all over the place since it was windy. The iTroll really saved the day for kicker speed control at your fingertips.
Caught the first fish on the lead core, these fish are really spunky! Too much fun trying to get them in the boat! Lost a bunch while trying to keep the boat from swapping ends in the wind. Finally managed to get four in the boat that were 12 to 13 inches; what beautiful fish! They really were partial to orange. Landed one off the downrigger (lost many more) and three off the lead core. Score another one for the lead core! At four o'clock the bite died. Fished till five and called it a day.
Have fun out there and stay safe.
