Well I should start by letting you know this was only my second time out using a kayak to fish, so there is a good chance my technique is lacking.

I started around 6am and fished through till 10am with not so much as a strike. The fish were there and you d it necessary to jump now and again just to smite me. I tried a yellow flat fish lure for the first hour and moved onto a crankbait for a short time but had no luck with either. I moved onto a gold and brown rooster tail and still didn't improve my luck. For the last hour I tried using a Macks double whammy in pink and weighted the line to get some added depth. No luck. I attempted all while paddling a pretty steady pace and tried some different depths, but just couldn't convince the fish to bite.

As I stated before, this was only my second time out on the kayak and I am new to fishing so I could be going about this all wrong. None the less the lake was quiet aside from a short burst of Girl Scouts in canoes.

Hang in there, I find the rainbow bite goes down this time of year! I fish for them from my kayak in the same way you describe but switch to salmon this time of year. But when they're biting what you're doing will work! A green wedding ring is a good one to troll with.

The fishing has been a lot slower out there lately. It used to be that you could fish any time during the day and do well. Now it's only the super early and late times that produce much. I used to be able to do very well trolling a dodger and fly, but lately have had to resort to cowbells and nightcrawlers. I've heard guys are hitting on Triple Teasers, too, but haven't tried them.

Other guys seem to do well using a full-sink or sinking-tip fly line and stripping/trolling leech patterns. (Purple is the ticket, I think.)

The water temp is really high, and there has been no rain in over a month, so I suspect there may be low oxygen levels in the water.

I have the best results about 50' behind the boat, with 1/2 to 3/4 ounce of weight. I try to get down around 15 feet. Concentrate along the shoreline from the dock/beach at the Girl Scout camp in the NW corner to the point at the middle of the north shore.

Try 25' down next time. A few are higher. Darker lures seem steadier for me. If you see an orange Hobie there, say hello.
