Lake Stevens has the best of me…

I took out my visiting brother Chris and his wife and daughter for some relaxing local fishing. I arrived and had the boat in the water and fishing around 6:20am. Met a fellow NWFR member there, didn’t catch his name but always nice to say hi to a site member.

I fished on my own with two rods until they arrived at 7:45am. I caught two kokanee, both at 25 feet on the downrigger, pink wobbler dodger with Reli Lures wedding ring lure. Corn was scented with Monster Bite and a few other enhancements. The fish came from the southeast corner of the lake just off shore. Nice takes and I was hopefully once running a full set of rods we’d get at least a few fish… wishful thinking!

With Chris, Karenna, and Elsa in the boat we ran five rods, four on the riggers and one leaded line. A variety of lures and scents were in place, fishing depths from 25 to 60 feet deep. Brutal from the word go as we worked the same area and then headed up to the aerator. Once up there we had a solid take that Chris reeled in, then a little while later a light biter that came off as Karenna was reeling in. These fish came at 50 feet on the DR on another Reli wedding ring in gold/silver.

And that was it. I talked to one other angler that had four in his boat at 7:30. The fish are nice - 13 to 14” and in very nice shape. I just wish I could get one day of slaying them under my belt!

Mike, I am a local here at Lake Stevens. I was out last Saturday morning from 6 to 9 am and pulled up 8 fish from the 55 to 60 range, no luck shallower or deeper. The temperature at that depth has been around +/-50 degrees. I would say the Kokanee bite has been a bit slower these last few weeks. Anyway, here's what I have been doing to get pretty consistent results here lately. 4 inch Shasta Tackle sling blades with silver patterns on them.Bend the fat end up a bit to get it to swing back and forth a little better. Some homemade wedding ring style spinners in green patterns and green micro hoochies with small willow leaf blades. I have tried other colors but always seem to have the best results with green lately. I also try to use only UV color lures and sling blades. Short leaders too, 8 to 10 inches. I only bring one flavor of corn too. Soaked overnight in tuna fish oil and Pro-cure bloody tuna scent. I am also trolling about 1.2 to 1.4, varying the speed to trigger strikes. I launch from Wyatt Park and go directly across the lake near the east shore and troll north from there maybe 600 to 800 yards and then head south again. GPS marking 3 or 4 schools as you come across them and then just target them. This is what has been working for me lately.

Hi mike im another lake stevens local, I was out with a coworker the day before you went. Lake stevens seemed normal for this time of year. Everything green, if it slows go pink. We had 14 in the boat from 6am-10. But you need to be here for the first hour of light, about 5am right now, that's always the most productive hour. But there are certain dodger/lure combos I've found work most the year all day long. If your lure got hit and then slowed later, just change the dodger. As for depth, I've still been starting at 35ft when I get there, and ending the day at 50ft. Hope to see you try stevens again with success.

thanks for the tips guys. I need to vary my presentations more. Staying too much in the pink/orange range. Greens it is!
