I was up in the San Juan's testing out the new (to me boat), '78 Glasply cuddy, while the boat ran great cannot say the same for fishing. Tried for Chinook on Sunday, but just ended up losing the downrigger ball and cable termination, when the cable hung up and broke. Went into Friday harbor and picked up new gear, only to lose that when my crimp failed on the crappy termination clips they had, so I went on to chase some of the Atlantic Salmon.

Pulled into the small bay just north of the net pens to anchor at the buoy for the night and the fish are just flying out of the water near the shore. Just out of casting range from the boat so we take the dingy into shore, holding out the net thinking that might be the best chance. No sooner did I put the net down a fish landed right next to us splashing both me and my wife.
Unfortunately with all the eel grass in that bay no chance to catch anything really, but I tried for a couple hours. The native netting the other side of the bay asked if we had any luck, when I said no he gave me a lure which he had caught a few on the day before. It was nice, but did not help me. The only one catching anything in the bay was the seal, and he made sure to gloat about it swimming right up to my boat with an Atlantic in his mouth just to tease me.

Next morning we headed over near the pens, did not anchor at the shore like most people, but was out in a little water trying jigging or anything else I could think of. Saw lots of fish jumping everywhere, but no nets were out.
Went over to Guemes Island to join the people there trolling the shore, with similar results. I did actually see one fish caught.

There were some nets but really close to the shore so I did not think those would be catching anything but Atlantic's anyway.

Unfortunately my power bait was not in my tackle box, that seemed to be the ticket from talking with others.
