Thought i'd try my luck this weekend at catching my first Salmon.
From what i've read, Pink Salmon are a great place to start for a beginner such as myself.
I received lots of helpful tips from friendly folks on this site in regards to gear, bait options, locations to fish.
With all that in mind, I was finally ready to pursue these fish.
My friend and I arrived on the Sky around 7:30am. It was pretty crowded along the shoreline where we parked so we hiked a bit up the river to find a less crowded area. We found a nice little seam of deeper water, the fish were jumping and rolling around for pretty much the entire time we were on the river in this spot (about 5 hours). Tried dick nites, buzzbombs, jigs, nothing seemed to be working. This all changed when I switched to a Pink spin and glo, with some sandshrimp on there. Received lots of strikes, successfully landed my first Salmon after about an hour. He was a nice Buck Pink Salmon. The fight took about 10 minutes on my setup, and I was able to keep the fish in the water during the hook removal so it could be safely released back into the river. About an hour later I landed another, but it spit the hook about 5 feet from shore. Would've had more if the sandshrimp I bought wasn't so brittle and provided the fish with a little more free lunch than I liked, but all in all it was a great time. Thanks to everyone who helped me out, and hope others have some good luck with these gorgeous fish!
