Went up to Whidbey with my wife on Sunday/Monday to get in a two more days of fishing before the beaches closed. We started around 10:00 AM both days and fished till around 4:00 P.M. The first day was pretty quiet, threw a combination of rotators with hoochies and floated some herring. Had a few takes on the herring and lost them both close to shore but the fight was fun (and I generally release them all anyways.) Most of the fish in the area seem to be on the smaller side, had quite a few just nibble at the bait but never take it.

On Monday we went out and it was pretty dead for most of the day. I threw out everything I had in the tackle box with no luck, even tossed a fly out there. Around 2 P.M. a local named Joe who we had met the day earlier came by and chatted for a bit... he had been fairly successful both days while most around us weren't catching much. He recommended a white and pink buzz bomb with a pink bead, and was nice enough to give us one of his. Sure enough that did the trick! My wife had it on and not 5 minutes into fishing with the new lure she catches a small pink. Over the course of the next hour we caught 9 or 10 fish of all varieties (Trout, small pinks, flounder (I think), and a small ling cod). All in all it was a fun afternoon, the only thing that eluded us was a large salmon. Included some pics of the fish my wife caught, all released.

Special thanks to Joe (wherever you are!) for the advice and buzz bomb.

No need to be sorry, appreciate the education. Never caught either before!

That's not a small pink. Looks more like a juvenile coho

Seems like I'm having some issues identifying my fish! In general how can you tell the difference between kings/coho/pinks?

Aside from the fish I.D. I would suggest not putting those shaker salmon in the net, its very hard on them when the scales get knocked off like that.

Thanks quick, she might have gotten a little "over excited" at catching her first one but we talked about the importance of safe handling since then!

Har har, I did indeed. Another self proclaimed comedian with no concern for conservation, with meat on his mind. Did you think of that one while comparing worms with the rest of the "elite" steelywhoppers on the Cowlitz?
