This is a report for the past 3 days - every day was great! Lots of fish on the line (although most were shakers) and only 1 native out of the bunch! My report below is specifically for Friday, which was the most productive day of the bunch. Over the 3 days we totaled 6 keepers (about 40 lbs. of fish total)

Started off near Shilshole. Not a lot of action, just a lot of weeds but it was totally amazing when we saw a pod of Orcas feeding/swimming in between a few boats that were trolling. That's quite the site to see for sure!
After about an hour, we motored over to the main line-up off Edmonds. There must have been 100 boats and we didn't get a bite for over 3 hours. Saw only a few pulled out.

We finally headed back just south of the Woodway oil docks and it totally went off. We caught our limit of 4 in about an hour. We tried a bunch of different rigs, but the most successful was a small silver flasher with white edges and a iridescent purple squid hoochie. They just seemed to NAIL it and only a handful that hit the hoochie were shakers. Get out there - it's hot right now!

One thing I saw that REALLY bothered me was Indians stringing a NET all the way across the entire sound between Woodway docks and Jefferson Point! I'm sure I'll get a lot of flak for saying anything about this, but how many generations have to go by before we are done "paying retribution" to a specific type of person with a certain DNA strand for issues that somebody else's great-great-great Grandfather did? I mean - they net completely across the rivers, but do they also have to take every single fish out of the Sound as well? >:(
Please - no haters in the comments. Don't give me any BS lines about how "they need it for sustenance" - I've NEVER met a more disrespectful group of fishermen. They pull the fish out of the nets, throw them into a truck to suffocate (w/out bleeding them), and if it's chum salmon, they just cut them open, take the eggs to sell and leave the bodies to rot! How is this any worse than the White Man killing buffalo just for the tongue? Fair is Fair, but enough is ENOUGH! Laws need to change and get into the 21st Century!

I just got done throwing all those tails in the photo (along with a few others I've saved up over the past 2 months) into a salt, water, vinegar brine to make some pickled salmon. If you've never done it this way, it's (in my opinion) the best way to have salmon. It's a texture thing - turns what is typically soft and buttery into a nice firm steak.

You wont get flak from me. I posted some info on tribal fishing in the saltwater forum and I don't want to repeat it again.. You might take a look. The only body that has any authority over the tribes is the federal government, but they do exactly nothing. The tribes are really a sovereign nation and the WDFW has no jurisdiction over them. I actually feel kinda sorry for the WDFW. It must be frustrating for them.

No grief from me either on trial fishing. I saw them waste them, throw them back, sell them for a dollar, net from bank to bank .... You name it. I once chellenged couple of them. The response I got "it is our historic right to fish the rivers that we kept from all the unfairness given to us ...." well fish the rivers or destroy them may be a fine line but it defensively showing.
Nice fish, great report

No bashing from me as well. I too have seen the greed and selfish actions by the tribes. For many years I felt pride in the Native Americans, but that changed a few years back. It is getting worse, and will continue to do so until the federal government has the will to take action. Thanks for the post.

We keep losing access due to complaints about fishing side by side with tribal fishermen. Thanks for the report.

All great comments - it seems like a unanimous consensus that the Federal Government needs to update regulations to make them FAIR. I guess the next question is WHERE DO WE START? How do we do this to get the ball rolling?

BTW - PICKLED FISH RECIPE (this is the one I've used that seems to work best, and I've only tried 3 of them)
