This is my second squid season. Two years ago I had same kinda experience. Every time I was trying to fish for squid I had just couple of them, and just watching everybody else around me catching them . One night I was almost crying, coming home with 2 squids in my bucket, thinking that I'm just stupid, have no skills etc. The problem is ( We are not stupid, some of us just don't know how to catch them and obviously don't have enough knowledge how to do so) that nobody wants to share information in nowadays. I was trying and trying, and almost was ready to quit. But last year, last November(Marine Area 10, 2016) I was reading our fishing reports for Area 10 and I found out that one guy had the same bad luck, asking what is that he's doing wrong and not catching squid. One guy answered to him ,telling him what kinda of lures to buy and where. Explain to him how to fish for squid from public piers, docks etc. And you know what after that comment we did not have any problems. Last year I was fishing Golden Gardens and Seacrest Park, almost every night limiting out and bringing home 5-10lb of delicious calamaris. Last Tuesday night I came to Golden Gardens at 6pm( Low Tide was at 8:45pm if I'm not mistaken). First squid at 6:03 . Then it was slow. South wind 10-15 mph. Some people left around 7:30pm-8pm. Around 8:30pm school of squid entered Marina , rain started( Somehow squid likes when it's raining, I don't know why), and till 9:30pm it was just non stop action. I got my limit and went home. Colors which worked for me were- White /Red and Pink with Green stripes( When squid is coming in great numbers, almost any color works). When you see school of squid you can catch them right away, not too deep. But then they dive, you have to go deeper and let your lower lure touch the bottom, then reel it in 3 - 4 times and keep your lures 15" - 1' above the bottom. What else. From my last Squid Season experience I was fishing for squid on outgoing tides, good nights were when it was raining. And don't quit even when it's slow. Some times when you stay longer,even you see some people already leaving,don't worry, next hour can produce good numbers of squid for you. 11/16/2017 7:33:30 AMLet them ink out with one squirt when you bring them out of the water, then grab your lead which is heavier than your jigs to avoid tangle and flip them off your jig into the bucket but picking the lead up which makes the jig turn upside down, flip the squid off the bottom jig, then the middle, then the top. Typically get 3-4 squid per 3 jigs each drop. You get in a rythm and it gets pretty easy with no mess. They’re on the bottom in 80-90’ you can see the schools. Last part of in Tide is best but during a screaming outtide works too they’re still there...takes more work to stay on top of them. stay on bottom.
