What a fun trip. My brother and I met my cousin in Davenport to head up to Ft Spokane. After we dropped the firewood for the campfire we launched and were fishing by 10. We started fishing in the mouth where we've had success in the past. We made one pass from the no wake zone out to the confluence without a bite. We kept rolling along to seven bays hitting points and bays without any success as well. Then we motored across to Black rock to fish off of those flats without any bites. So we pulled up and headed down to the rocks across from Lincoln. We picked up two fish along the rocks as we got A rock. We figured we would give it about another 15 minutes and then swing back around to see if we could pick up a couple more. Good call on that because lights out fishing started! We were fishing the flat after a rock in anywhere from 15 to 30 feet of water and the fish were definitely up there feeding. The three of us ended up catching 22 fish with 7 natives that had to go back. Biggest fish of the day was 21 inches with several more 19 and 20 inchers. We had 3 doubles. We didn't start catching fish until it was after 1 and we were done with our limit by 3:30, it was pretty steady fishing once we found them.

We fished two rods, one orange Kekeda and one perch Kekeda. Yesterday the perch outfished the orange 2 to 1. We had downriggers started at 12 and 7 feet but ended the day at 4 and 5 feet. May seem ridiculous to use downriggers for that shallow but that way we know exactly how deep we are and once off the clip it's just straight line to the fish. Speed was around 2.4 and water temp was 39.9.

Returned to camp and had a nice campfire and some leftover prime rib from Christmas. Really fun trip!

Sounds like a great trip, I plan to fish in the new year at A Rock this year too.

We often hit the rocks to see if they're there. When they're there, there's generally plenty of fish and they usually end up being big. It's been a great spot for us.

I was there Thursday as well. I had the most success with orange Kekeda fly on the surface putting out 50' of line behind a planer board 50' from the boat. no weight, fluorocarbon line so fly was probably within 1-2 feet of the surface.
Orange Kekeda out-fished all other lures 7 to 2.

Glad to hear about your success with Kekedas! I appreciate you sharing that on here. They were definitely right on top that day. Just another trip that confirmed the need for changing up presentation speed and depth, both depth of water and lure depth. Thanks again for the comment. -Dave

Well done! I wanted to be there but the older I get the fussier I get about the roads. Thanks for the report.

Thanks! The roads weren't great. With the camper on the truck and pulling the boat we were pretty grounded though. Took it slow. Fishing made it worth it too! Waiting a day or two after the snow should make a difference. Plus all three of us were on break so wanted to take advantage of the time off. Take care, Dave

Dave have you thought of making your flies with a single trailing hook? I sometimes think the treble hooks tear up the fish being released more than necessary? I'd be willing to try it if your willing to tie it?

I have done that for guys that have asked. I agree with you on those native fish, probably does more damage than a single octopus trailer. To be honest that's the most native fish I've caught in a long, long time, if ever. So usually it's not an issue. All of the fish yesterday were mouth hooked and went back swimming fine with barely any blood if any at all.

Next time I order flies we can talk about doing up a few with single hook. We even release some net pen fish once in a while.
Appreciate the report, Will send one in Wednesday next week.

Since there hasn't been any Kokanee in sight. I've crimped the barbs down on Dave's flies for releasing rainbows. I know the eagles gotta eat, but I don't want to make them so fat they can't fly. LOL Good practice for barbless hooks at Hanford Reach.

Nice report! I started catching so many Red Bands a couple years ago that I switched to singles on everything including plugs. I also got tired of feeding the eagles. We catch some almost every trip.

What a great report Dave! So wish my week would have played out differently, but life does get in the way at times. Upside is I got two consecutive unplanned grandpa days with my granddaughter. Thanks for the great pictures an report. :-)

Dave, nice to see you got out with your brother and cousin for your annual winter camp over at Roosevelt. I have had a very busy fall and so haven't been out much so I sure love fishing with you and others by way of Northwest Fishing Reports. As always your flies are awesome and do a great job. Thanks for the report. "The Experiment Must Continue" Happy New Year - Alan - iFishSolutions.com
