My brother and I launched out of Keller on Tuesday January 2nd at around 8:30am. The ramp was pretty icy and we slid half way down the ramp getting the boat in the water. Luckily there was some bare concrete showing at the bottom to slow the truck down. There was only one other truck in the parking lot when we got onto the water. Since the ramp was so slippery we decided to throw some sand from the beach on it so we could get back out at the end of the day without any trouble. The air temp was about 18 degrees and with a bit of wind blowing it sure felt cold. We motored straight out of the bay at Keller to the cliffs on the other side and started trolling at 1.8 mph. The fist pole I put in had a 4inch Mack DD dodger with a 2.5 foot leader to a pink Pro Troll Kokanee Killer tipped with maggots and Anise scent. I put it down at 15ft on the downrigger. As I was baiting up the second rig, the first pole came out of the clip and there we had our first fish of the day. A nice 18inch rainbow. I put the Pro Troll set up back out and had our second fish before I got my other pole out again. It was another Rainbow but not quite as big. We caught two more rainbows in the next hour and then the action slowed. We trolled down the lake from Keller and had a few more bites but lost several fish before we could net them. We varied our speed from 1.5-2.0 mph and caught fish at all speeds during the day. Around 1230 we started trolling back toward the launch. We had 4 poles in the water. Two were on sidewinder planers which worked well and 2 on downriggers at 15 feet. I did do some exploring with depth on the downriggers but never had any bites lower than 20 feet. At one point we came over a large school of fish at about 80feet down in 270 feet of water that sure looked like Kokanee. I dropped down to them but didn't get a bite. We ran various combo's of gear(sling blades, dodgers, hoochies) but pink was definitely the hot color. Never got a bite on the chartreuse hoochie I had out. We decided to call it a day at 3pm with 8 nice rainbows in the box. We were really hoping for some kokanee but they are hard to find right now. Pulling the boat out of the water went off without any issue thanks to our sanding job.
