To honor our past presidents, I decided to take the day off and go fishing.
The weather report said it would be below freezing until 10:00am. That seemed like a nice time to start.
I made it on the water at 11:00am and headed left this time off of the launch to troll the East side. I brought with me a bunch of home brewed lures with beads and blades or flashers and I was armed with all varieties of Goods tooth lures and dodgers. Line#1: lead core line to gold/silver home brew. Line#2: downrigger to 50/50 gold/silver dodger and 50/50 gods tooth lure; 30’behind ball. As JoshH said in an earlier report, the level shifts were tricky and required a lot of work. Now I know what you were talking about JoshH. I had the downrigger at about 30’, and saw levels changing from 20’ to 50’, forcing me to turn the boat in and out with the occasional panic downrigger retrieval! Tough to keep near the bottom, but there were fish down there… I passed back and forth across a nice dip that showed marks. On the third pass, I was able to see my downrigger level go right through a school. Guess what? Yep –Fish On. It was a 11” cutty. Decent fight for the size. After three more passes and a couple of snags, losing my lure, it was time to move forward. More interesting fluctuations of depth and fish marked the East side. Also a few more snags. Wind kicked up and brought with it a wind chill. It was time to go. Next time I may try jigging those fish out of their hideouts. Happy Fishing!
