Went out to Rock Lake for the first time last Saturday. After reading reports about the dangers the lie below, coupled with cold water, I decided I was going to just troll around to explore the lake to keep my speeds down. Started trolling right away up the western cliffs. Landed and released a few tiny bait-sized rainbows off the point on the north-side of that first bay. Both on an orange kekeda tipped with worm on a planner board. Kept trolling north and finally landed a decent 16" brown on a brown trout rapala. Trolled up until the first "minefield" on the west side and started to cast some jerk baits into the shallow water. No luck.

Next, we tried casting some greenpumpkin curly tailed grubs into the minefield. Bam. It was game on the rest of the day. Constantly caught fish for the next several hours, fishing the several shallow, rocky areas dispersed throughout the lake. Nothing too big, but a few 17" rainbows and browns. Seemed to be some hard fighting fish there. Released all to be caught another day. Good overall trip for an exploration trip. Launch was definitely an unimproved launch, but nothing difficult to maneuver.

KGood. Thanks for the report and it was very timely for us as we're looking at going over there later on in March. You referred to the "minefield" and that caught my attention. Whereabouts is it and are you talking about sub surface rocks? Probably a stupid question given the name of the lake. The chart that I have is far from accurate and is only useful for depths. Sonar won't help unless you have a forward scanning head unit and transducer which we don't have in our skiff. I've heard that there are some larger than average browns in Rock and that's enticing.

I've also been told that the upper end of the lake by a small creek inlet is excellent early in the season so we'll see what can be had and report back.

There is a thread back from 2014 called “Rock Lake dangers” where Anglinarcher writes an in depth report on the lake and posts a map where some of the iffy areas are. There you will see the location of the “minefields”.

Rock is a great lake to try new techniques on. Keep up the persistence, the big boys will be waking up once the water warms a few more degrees.
