Back out to Stevens again today. Kokanee fishing is addicting! I again planned to be on the water before sun-up, no dice. By the time I got my lines in the water, it was about 7:15. There was a very noticeable increase in the number of folks fishing on Stevens today. People are starting to turn their attention towards these tasty little silver bullets. With the weather warming up, the fishing should only get better.
Today wasn't quite like last weekend as far as the action. I had a little bit right off the bat, then the typical dead period, then steady the rest of the day. Folks that got their limits today needed to put their time in, as did I. Last weekend I was getting fish between 30-40 feet down, deep for this time of year, but not too bad. Today I had to drop my lines down to 60 and 65 feet to find consistent action. Fishing deeper for Kokanee usually mean the fish have a better chance of getting off of your line on the way in, and today they did. In all I had 18 fish on to land my 10.
I started one line with a 50/50 blue Elgin Fishing God's Tooth Spoon 16 inches of leader with a prototype Elgin Fishing dodger I've put some moon jelly tape on. On this line I was experimenting with Berkley maggots. Drained off the juice, dried with a paper towel, then cured over night with some kokanee corn magic. Next day I added super dipping sauce. This set up got a few fish, but I eventually changed the maggots out and went back to corn, and was more consistent. After losing my gear on that line I switched to a pink top Gods Tooth, and that wound up being a good choice, as I got a lot of action with it. I did somehow get hung up in 100 feet of water 65 feet down, no where near the old aerator, and lost my dodger :(. The other line was my go-to kokanee set up, 50/50 brass/nickel Elgin Fishing God's Tooth Spoon rigged for kokanee by Reli Lures, 16 inches of leader behind a Dick Nite clown pattern dodger. Fire corn soaked in super dipping sauce, everything dunked in the sauce before hitting the water.
The surface water temps this morning stayed right around 46, so it is slowly warming up. Speed the fish seemed to want was slow. I got bit between .80 - 1.15 mph today. Any faster, nothing.
