Back out to Stevens this morning. The morning though did not start like I had hoped. After the 3am wake up, I got dressed, ate and headed out, and left all of my bait at home. Ugg. Turned around and headed back home. I got to the lake about 5:15am, and was greeted by a light mist, hoping the rain would hold out... it did!

Had my lines in the water right at dawn. Ran both lines at 5 feet. One line with a 50/50 brass Elgin Fishing God's Tooth spoon with a Dick Note clown dodger, and the other line with a green top Elgin Fishing God's Tooth spoon paired with a Elgin Fishing Prototype dodger. There was action in the early morning, but not as much action as I thought I should have been getting. A friend was on the lake, and got on and off in 2 hours with his limit. Started trying to figure something out. I knew fish were on the surface, so depth wasn't my issue. I started playing around with set back lengths. That didn't work. Got a text from Elgin Fishing to see how my morning was going. Relayed that it was ok, but not what I expected. He asked if I had tried changing leader length......... I have been running 16 inches so far this spring, but the fish have been deep. I shortened up my leaders to 12 inches and BINGO. Pretty quickly got my last 6 for my limit. Learned a lesson I already knew today. Most of the time kokanee fishing, it's not what you have in the water that is the main factor in success, it's how you are presenting it. Change speeds, troll in a figure 8 pattern, change set back lengths, and, change leader length :)

In the end, 50/50 brass and 50/50 blue were the hottest pattern, I did pick up 1 or two on green. Surface water temp is up to 56, so the fish should be on the surface early mornings for a little bit longer. As the water temp warms, they will slowly start working their way down.

I ended my day with 10 kokanee and a bonus cutthroat. Video shows the action from this morning. First 2 clips there was a light mist in the air that played a little havoc with the GoPro. The rest of the clip are clean.

Great report - Nice fish! I will be on the lake tomorrow so this is a timely reminder about kokanee fishing lessons.

Tight lines.

Hey Josh what do ya do when ya get a double on , how do ya know which one to reel first ? Seems like when it happens ya just react I'm thinkin . How do ya get all the gear and net , yourself and all the rest into that boat , Carefully , I've got a couple of kayaks tried two poles at once it was insane couldn't keep up with it maybe with an open boat it's a bit less work it looks like ya got a super neat set up everything ya need , must say your reports have shown everybody how to catch fish with a little boat , and the info and vids well , speaks for it self. these kind of reports are what make this web site worth watching . Go Josh

It surprising how much room there actually is in a Hobie. The nice thing with the Pro Angler series, is that there is a place for everything, and everything has a place. On doubles, I will stick with the first one that got in and make sure I land it before going to the 2nd fish. If both fish get on at the same time, I with quickly release both from the downrigger clip, and whatever line is in my hand last is what gets brought in first. Thanks for the compliment, I try and pass along what I have learned each time out, as each time fishing you pick up a little something from your experience.
