Whoo-hoo, 4 trips in one week! Tuesday morning, nice weather, a few hours free and I was going fishing. I arrived at Lake Samish just before 6:00 and was second in line. It was a quick trip through the AIS inspection and so I was able to start fishing by 6:00.
Starting just outside the buoy I rigged a pearl Arrow Flash dodger and a small custom spinner on one side of the boat and a hammered 50/50 Arrow Flash and another small spinner on the other side of the boat. Both the spinners were tied on 8” of 12# fluorocarbon and tipped with plain tuna corn. The action kicked off as I was getting the first rod out. I had just stripped about 50’ of line off the reel and as I was setting the downrigger clip the line is jerked out of my hand. The fish was a feisty one and I lost it as I was getting the net out. No matter I was in the middle of a kokanee-Konvention, and it was nonstop kokanee until my 5 fish limit was on-board. There were a few drive-bys, 3 or 4 short releases, a number of doubles and I was done in about ½ hour.
The water temperature has really come up and was 60.1 degrees. My trolling speed was 1.3-1.4 mph and all fish were hooked on the surface flatlining. The fish were all 10-12”, a nice grade of early season kokanee. It was kind of a bittersweet trip. The fast action and early limit was nice but I love kokanee fishing. I could have used another few hours of kokanee-based therapy. A fun morning and I was home with fish cleaned and boat put away by 8:30.
