I had the privilege to fish the walleye derby last weekend with Brad from Mark's marine on their new Lund walleye boat. It is equipped with all the "goodies" including the iTroll with Hunt for the kicker. It also has the Min Kota Ulterra trolling motor on the front...cool! Never should have run one of those; it'll cost ya!! The 200 HP Merc Verado kicked us along at a mere 54 mph...life is good!
We pre-fished Friday in the nasty rain. Fishing was not great but we managed a few walleye, a giant crappie along with some nice perch and a small mouth bass. All went home for dinner except the little ones. We didn't catch any walleye over 18 inches not a good sign.
Saturday was the first day of the tournament; these guys are serious fishermen and women. Rabid might describe it. We only found two walleyes for the day and one of them came from deep and died as soon as it hit the live well; 1/2 pound deduct aarg. The 6 fish stringers for the day came in at around 3# a fish average. The largest being around 8#.
Sunday was bright and sunny and very warm. Talk about different weather; welcome to Eastern Washington. We picked a couple of nice walleye right away and figured we were going to have a nice day...wrong. That was it for the day. Some of the boats had the six fish again and the total weight for the two days was around 44 pounds for the winner. All in all I would say tough fishing.
I would like to say thanks to Brad for inviting me to my first ever walleye tournament; it was an experience for sure!
