We were able to grab a last minute camping spot at Big twin lake outside Winthrop for Saturday night. Nice place with plenty of open sites for a busy weekend everywhere else.
I rented one of their row boats Sunday morning to do a little trolling as the shores are all weedy. Selective gear rules and just a 1 fish limit on both the big and little twin lakes, so I pinched the barbs on my lures.
Started out with a wedding ring with a green spinner, halfway around the lake with no action I switched over to a pink sparkled Dick Nite. Right away I got a nice hit but it quickly came off. Kept rowing around the southern end of the lake into the edge of the last remaining shade, lots of bugs at the surface and a couple fish rising to get them, fly fishing would have been good, but I am not a fly guy (yet at least), no love for the Dick nite. I was just about to swap out colors and the lure gets slammed by a nice size rainbow (about 14"), bring him in and let it swim away to grow a little (with a 1 fish limit did not want to stop too soon).
Rowed around for another few minutes and the rod gets buried once more, just about lost it (no rod holders so I had to try and balance between my legs as I rowed). Short spirited fight later I find a nice 16" fatty on the line, decide to bonk this one. Called it a day at this point since I was unsure if I could still continue to catch and release.
