Went out with a couple friends today and yesterday and got into some nice fish. We used a variety of gear, swung spoons, twitching jigs, single hand fly rods with bead and indicator, spey/switch rods with sink tips and hobo spey flies and flesh flies. It all worked. We litterally caught fish on all offerings in all manner of water, from head to tail, pockets to guts.

-Switch set up for this small to medium sized river is a 9ft custom fiberglas 5wt switch rod with a scientific angler running line, 15ft opst commando head, 8ft of T14, short tippet and flesh fly
- single hand is a 9ft 6wt vintage fiberglass wright and mcgill favorite set up with ffwf, while not ideal does work in a pinch for the very little nymphing that i do.
-my spinning rod is a 7'6" g loomis e6x rated 6-10lb, lined on an okuma ceymar, with 14lb stren this is my go-to twitching rod , it is litterally perfect for it's intended purpose. I also fish spoons with it, which is adequate, but not ideal for. Good enough though.

The things to look for when trouting this time of year are of coarse the salmon. So fishing behind them can be key. Also note that hot fresh salmon from the salt tend to be territorial and aggressive and will push trout/char out of their usual lies and into non ideal habitat, pocketwater, nearshore seems, vulnerable shallow spots, white water etc. In our case, we found trout in these odd spots, many of which were situated in ripping white water chutes just downstream of big gut runs full of salmon. The salmon are fun to catch and very sporting, but our target on this trip were trout and char, although we caught all manner of fish regardless.
