My son Bo came down for a little bit of fishing. I took him to American Lake. This was the first time I think, I have been here this year, his, ever fishing it. It was sunny and about 50 out to begin with at 7am. The water temperature was 69 degrees.
After an aborted trip to marine area 13 on Thursday because the starter’s bendix wouldn’t engage the flywheel. Then a trip to get a new one (week wait) but he looked at it, oiled the shaft, it worked in the parking lot. The big motor worked fine out on the lake. So we went all the way to the northeast end and I planned on trolling toward the southwest.
After about 20 minutes I saw both my rods go down then come back up a few times. I looked over to the fish finder to see how deep we were because that is the way it acts when dragging bottom. No, should be fine that way. Then nothing happens. So I decide to bring them in. I am getting the top one in and see a big chunky fish jump and tell Bo to get the net I have a fish on, he says he does too. I say mine is big he says mine is too. So we both just heave them over the side and guess what, mine is bigger. Later he told me that it bothered him I got the bigger fish.
I turn around and go through the area again and I get bit. Go through again I get one more trout in. Bo doesn’t get any more bites, I only get a few and we leave about 11am. We fished 25-40 down on the riggers.
I see from the video that the top rod (separated by about 10 feet) got more attention than the bottom but the fish turned away. I used two scents on my corn and I believe the one on the bottom rod they liked and the top they didn’t.
When using two rods one can think that the reason one gets bit more is because of depth. But if you add a camera to it and see what really happens then you will know for sure rather the fish are there or just don’t like what was offered them.
