A brief report on Area 10. JoAnn and I decided this year since our first weekend of fishing out of Edmonds coincided with the derby that we would moor our boat for the weekend. We arrived and got a slip and then decided to hit the water for a couple hours, dinner on Puget Sound and fishing always sounds good!
Salmon gear in the water at 4:45. HT was at 4pm so we were fishing an outgoing tide.

Not wanting to deal with the clipped fin issue we ran down to below Edwards Point. Shallow rod at 60 feet on the rigger, army truck medium hoochie, large green flasher. Deep rod at 90 feet, chartreuse flasher, magnum green glow hoochie. Since I had no herring ready to go I grabbed some prepped shad strips that I was planning to use for lakers. I figured shad is a big herring and it should work. I figured right!

15 minutes into a south troll (into the outgoing tide) the shallow rod explodes with a nice fish. I worked the fish to JoAnn's waiting net and after a couple trys (it was our first trip this year) we got the fish in the net and in the boat. It was a huge hooknose coho in the 8-10 pound range!

The action went quiet , one drive-by at 6pm, and then at 7pm just as we were getting ready to call it a night the shallow rod again releases. JoAnn plays the nice coho to the surface were he promptly spit the hook after a nice arial display. Darn!

Using my itroll from ifishsolutions I kept the trolling speed at 3.8 to 4.1 into the tide, 3.5 with the tide. I added a speed bump so every 3 minutes the trolling motor would rev up .3mph just to give the coho something to think about. All hits came into the tide. I switched the deep rod up with a few different set ups but no luck, just the shallow rod got bit.

Other than 1-2 boats and a gill netter we had the waters to ourselves. That won't happen this weekend. So glad to have moorage so we can just hop in and go fishing. I talked to a couple anglers at the Marina and they all noted the coho are running big this year!

I keep my boat at the Edmonds dry stack so I fish 10 pretty much all the time. With 2 rods and 5 trips we have 17 in the boat since the middle of last week. Just a tip, most of the guys fish offshore 600 feet or so and so do we. But don't forget the 300 foot slot starting at of Edmonds pt with a north/south, back and forth troll pattern. I would say 70% of the fish we get are in that slot. There is a steep dropoff where the depth goes from 200 feet to over 400 feet very fast. Our theory is that some migrating Silvers often follow the edge of that dropoff at around 300 feet. That was true yesterday. We had 3 takedowns and got one early offshore at 600 feet or more. But the bite died so we switched to the 300 foot slot and got our limit including a 10 1/2 pounder in half an hour. The 300 foot slot was good last year also. 30/40 on the DR, down to 50/60 or more when it gets bright. Few guys fish the 300 foot slot so there is also less competition.

Hey Mike - I was out there this morning too - we limited by 7:30. First hook up was a double and got the next two within 30 min after that. It always happens all at once!
