Didn't want to just sit around the house today. Wife had errands and a loose promise to the 8 year old to visit the kids science museum. That left me with the ten year old. I gave him a choice - crab, coho, or trout. We started a load of laundry so we could claim some chores done. He chose Clear lake, surprising but OK, I get it - nice and relaxing, trolling with a heavy emphasis on snacks.
Went and hit the lake, day was really shaping up by then, nice and warm with some sun breaks. Slow fishing, got a 9" trout and some perch - then a sunfish, and a sucker. We let the small stuff go and kept some bigger fish. Then the last pass headed back to the launch we marked two pods of fish, but nothing happened when our gear ran through. Then jerk, jerk! Fish on! Better fish for sure! Tugging good, taking spurts of drag. The ten year old is ready with the net. The next rod starts dancing so I figured my line was crossed, then the rod starts bouncing independent from my fish. I say put that net down and take this rod! I get mine in and the boy is reeling in a 17" rainbow, big fish of the day.! Took three tries to net it, thought it was over 20" for sure.
Glad we made it out to the lake, I've been chasing coho and this was a nice change of pace. Good idea kid!
