Some folks might not give a 4 rating for a 2 coho day, but after a 3 week slump... a two fish limit MAKES MY DAY! With the river shutdown the next two days it is THAT MUCH SWEETER!
Somehow survived the weekend, was only able to get out Saturday morning. Saw a few caught, did not even bump into one. Got the kids on the bus this morning and then prepped for the river. Get to the river and damn! forgot my waders, just my boots -no waders. Oh well I’ve got my muck boots. I’ll just stay on the bank... start tossing the Dick nite and just can’t ever get down to tap the bottom. End up with 5/8oz lead on with a long leader and Tag! found one! Took my time, kept cool, got it in, but still got a little wet and a trickle down the boots. 4-5# fish! So happy!
I fish a little more and beak off my gear. Might as well get the fish on ice and retrieve my waders. Head home, do the coffee refill, bathroom whirlwind drill and back to the river! Come on hurry up dude, faster, faster...
Took a couple more hours to find the second bigger fish. Tried spoons in the slow water, spinners in the current seams, but when I went back to 5/8 oz lead and a dick nite... maybe 20-30 mins and fish on!
This one was out there a bit and I was in to my waist. I’ve learned some hard lessons lately and I just concentrated on the fish for a bit. Made my graceful? exit over rocks and river slime, stayed on two feet, got the fish on the rocks and pounced... I’m not proud or nonchalant in my approach. 5-6# fish!
Now I can relax and breathe a little. Maybe I can get some work done now.
Good luck out there!

When you say the "river shutdown the next two days" what do you mean?

Well just most of the easily accessible river. Wdfw closure all species Oct 2,3 and 9,10. From the mouth of the Skagit to Baker River in Concrete.
Tribal fisheries. Came out same as an emergency rule.

GREAT STORY!!
I’ve always wanted to fish the river...never sure on where to fish it as I prefer to steer clear of the more well known (thus more crowded) areas.
And...I have no idea of these Dick Night lures you speak of.

Perhaps we could get together over coffee sometime and you could show this river rookie a trick or two.

I didn’t ever give small thin spoons much time in the past, so I didn’t know how to drift fish them. I caught on a couple years ago, and now they are a go to lure for me.

I go through phases...spoons, spinners, corkies/yarn. Only way to get ‘em is with a line in the water. Good luck.
