Nice day yesterday, a bit breezy and chilly early, but I don't mind "wind trolling". ;-)

Like last time, we just fished two lead core rigs, no need for any more even though we both have 2 rod permits and I brought the mono rigs "just in case".

The Kekefa flies kicked proverbial butt as always. Perch and orange/black were equally effective. I fished the black/orange and my buddy the perch. I nailed first fish within seconds of setting my rod in the holder, 15 1/2", and no adipose so in the cooler it went. My buddy hit next and another in the cooler, and so it went for two hours.

I typically hug the shoreline but when an acquaintance of mine showed up behind us I decided to go wide around and back above him. Doing so took us out over deep water, against the wind, so I bumped trolling speed to 3mph. Not expecting any action, we were both surprised to get hard hits, and I locked onto one first. Soon as I picked the rod up knew it was a nice fish as it was pulling HARD and running down straight down. Once I got to the leader, it made several deep runs straight down before finally coming close enough to see the silvery flash. Two, three, maybe five times I got it within 15' of the surface only to have it power down again. Played carefully, it finally came to the surface and into the net. Of course, it was a native, but it was real nice, so after a couple in net pics I carefully removed the hook and held it over the side with the open end facing direction of travel until it swam forward and back into the deep. I estimate it was 22" and probably 3.5lbs. :-)

My buddy followed up with a nice 17.5" carryover so I decided we'd stay over the deep water and were able to finish our limits there.

Trolling speeds were 2.8 - 3mph, offerings were 155' behind the boat on leadcore with a 50' fluorocarbon leader and flies tipped with a chunk of worm.

Trout we kept ranged from 14" - 17.5" and we managed a couple SMB on slow turn over a sandy spot. One was about a pound and the other was 2lbs.

Overall a great day on the water. :-)

Been about two years since a Kokanee report from anyone Phil, guess we have lost that specie on Rosie. Nice report, will be at Rosie Saturday. Mtngrizz

Nice to here that the RBT were hitting your offerings. Sounds like people are also doing good up on the North End by Hunters. With the temps. dropping it's just going to get better. We will probably get out after the first weekend of deer season. Hope to see you on the water this fall. Tight Lines---Terry

I haven't heard of any kokanee being caught either and I know a lot of locals so if they were out there I'm sure I'd know. Wife wants to go out Saturday so if you're below Seven Bays look for our Hewescraft ProV, full canvas, white vinyl sides, and a pair pair of Mercs. :-)

Terry - Hunters is on the radar and will run north one of these days. We'll be out there this fall, hope we get a chance to meet up! ;-)

Hewescraft/Phil: Another good day here in paradise; that's a fine fat hog you got there. Sometimes fewer but larger fish make the day. It does seem like the faster trolling speeds are turning the trick. We also found the proverbial zig-zag pattern brings 'em out as well. Thanks for the report!

Very true, I troll like a "drunken sailor" as a former guide used to say, and always above the speeds of most, in fact, it's a very rare event I'm below 2.5mph. I'll always remember the same guide's mantra, "if you think you're trolling too fast, speed up". Good advice IMHO and I was over 3mph several times yesterday. Good to see some reports/comments from you again! ;-)

Great report! I had one like that last year that really gave a great fight on my light 7 ft Kokanee rod, good fun for sure. Hopefully the Guppy will be down there on Saturday. Watch out for us we drive a little crazy also.

Hewesfisher--- The former guide you quoted sounds like Lenny Mayo, he was a great believer in trolling at very high speeds, and was also good at it. thanks for the report and take care.

That's the one. I remember thinking he was crazy but he made a believer out of me. He's also the one who told me how to rig leaded line setups which I still follow to this day. See you on the water! ;-)

I ran in to him at Ft. Spokane a couple years ago when the Kokanee were in. He was a believer in the pink fly with chrome spinner. ( Which I copy with the Kekada fly). Plus, as you said he liked to troll fast or as he would say " Look at the shape of a Kokanee, You don't think it can swim faster than 2 miles an hour"? He is a character.
