Had a relaxing solo day on the water, except for the wind. A beautiful morning gave way to some wind and then calmed again around 2:00. Sunny and 55-ish most of the day

I launched at 7 Bays about 7:30 and trolled down river across from the launch until the headwind chased me to the other side where I trolled back upriver around the Hawk Creek area and past the launch. I’m a novice at most of this and today was a fun learning experience.

I boated 4 bows and kept two. The two biggest fish of the day (18 and 20 inches) were both natives and put back. Caught those on an orange Rapala stick bait behind chartreuse Hot Wings at about 15 FOW. The others were caught on an orange Kakeda fly behind a pink flasher off the DR at 25’. I lost two at the boat off each setup...hard to reel, net, and steer by yourself in the wind. It was an adventure!

All in all it was a fun day. Learned a bunch and seemed like I worked for every hookup. Good fishing everyone!

Went out yesterday...launched at Ft Spokane. Drove right to Hawk Ck . Trolled in & got into some nice healthy bows. Released 2 wild & we kept 9 frome 14"-16.5"! Had a ball reeling in some feisty fat bows. Started at 9:15 and quit around 1:30 pm.

Nice fish! We launched shortly after you did and were downstream "in the wind". Something I've learned to do if trolling, whether or not alone, when possible, put the wind behind you and use it to your advantage. Can make right angle turns broad side to the wind as long as you don't troll into the wind, and at most, the boat will do a 90° turn away from wind. Really helps with control issues when you hook up. ;-)

Thanks for the tip, appreciate all the help I can get. Hey, quick question. Look at the adipose fin on the fish with the orange Rapala. It was very small. I put him back but I couldn’t help but wonder if it was a net pen fish and they didn’t get the whole fin when they clipped it. Is the adipose fin usually more prominent? Thx!

The one with the orange Rapala has an intact adipose fin, I can even see the spots on it. There won't be an "appendage" from one that's been clipped. You might see a bump, partial fin, maybe even a vertical piece, but it it's not a complete fin it's been clipped. Do a search for adipose fin and you'll find plenty of good pictures to help you ID them. If you have the slightest doubt, the safe course of action is to release. Good fishing to you! ;-)

i am usually not the person quoting laws but hewsfisher is right. Also, remember to look at the adipose fin prior to bringing the fish into the boat. Both of your pictures show a fish laying on the deck. In WA state you must release the fish prior to taking the fish out of the water. I only say this because you said you were new to this fishery. It sounds like you had a great time and keep up with the reports. These reports help maintain the fishery by showing use and success in Lake Roosevelt. This fishery is funded by the BPA and by showing use and catch by fishermen the funds will keep coming in and there will continue to be plenty of fish for years to come.
