This trip was a product of only having two hours to fish tonight. Also, since this lake closes for no reason tomorrow, I thought I would run a lap in the kayak. A bit of algae stain greeted me but not terrible. I headed left from the launch and threw Senkos all along the laydowns and shoreline. I didn't so much as spook a fish with that and I fished it deep more than a few times. Threw a jig for a while and nothing on that either.

When I got near the far shallow end I decided to toss a floating Rapala and see if I couldn't go all Jamesb on em?! ;)

Sure enough, had a swirl instantly! These fish were in two feet or less water and near wood. If they missed it they were done as they would not come back or hit anything else I followed up with.

I caught two and missed three in that area so I stayed with it all the way back to the launch. Caught five more on the way back and probably missed the same. They weren't all shallow but they were all on wood cover.

They wouldn't hit it moving and still wouldn't touch a Senko. Probably my last after work trip this week but I know enough now to know exactly where I will be this Saturday!

Strange they would take it sitting still and not moving. I haven't had a bite from a dead sticking worm or dropshot in awhile, only moving stuff. Crankbaits usually. I did plan on trying a popper, but didn't get to it. That just goes to show how different lakes will fish different on the same day.

Absolutely. I should probably mention I only took Senkis, two Rapalas and a jig. Too little time and only the kayak so I just kept it simple!

Senkis are more fun than Senkos. lol I didn't even read it as an 'i'. I had to look again after your 'correction' comment. :-)

The floating Rapala has always been my favorite lure for bass. The surface strike is always exciting. I see you must be using the size 9. I almost always used an 11. Fish of all sizes hit it - My smallest measured bass was only 4 1/4 inches - shorter than the size 11. I fished Armstrong a couple times back in the 1990s. My best fish was 2 pounds, 8 ounces. That fish hit a black jig on July 27, 1992.
B8, was wondering what your count is now on successfully fished bass lakes. I am interested if any other bass angler keeps track of the number of lakes he has caught bass from.

Bob, I currently sit at 110 lakes. I only counted the Snake and Columbia Rivers once, even though I fished multiple sections of both. Next season this will take a quantum leap as I plan on revisiting multiple areas from my County Challenge on my vacations! I want to go camp in a county and then drive around fishing as many lakes as I can. My plan is fish one lake in the morning, take lunch, fish another in the evening. That way I can enjoy exploring each place instead of smacking on and bailing out like I did with the challenge....it was fun for what it was but these will be actual 'vacations' this time ;)

I use size #7 and #5...have to pick up #11 and try it sometime...I like smaller ones for hitting small openings in back of Lily pads...casting is the key got to hit your spot.

Glad my posts paid off!...I fished there in early July got all my fish under pine trees in shade and behind logs very close to shore...

The very first bass lure I ever owned was a gold and black Rapala I found snagged on a log. May still be floating around in my shop somewhere? Has to be pushing 40 years old now!

The floating Rapala has always been my favorite lure for bass also. I remember when the Rapala getting my 1st Rapala when 1st introduced into the US (about 1960. Before then the best top water bass bait in my hands was a Bass Oreno. The Rapala fished as stick bait or very slow retrieve was absolutely a bass slayer for about 2 years before they seemed to wise up to it a bit. I can remember seeing bass swim for it 10-15' before striking. I definitely have caught more bass on the Rapala Original Floater and Rebel floating Minnow than any other lure. May have something to do with the fact that it is my go to lure?
