Tried something new today, went down to explore the Swegal Road area of the Walla Walla River (only 15 minutes from town). Lots of long swift gravel runs, faster than walking speed, with a few short deeper runs widely spaced, and a handful of swirl pools. Lots of casts, short drifts, not many hangups. Thin to moderate brush. You don't have to get wet, but if you got a fish I would suggest a net/waders. Fished through with a float and fresh eggs from last week, then back through with a wobbler. Didn't even see a fish. I think early fish may be above and late fish still down by the Columbia but I'm not sure. Drove down to look at McDonald road area, below Mill Creek and the little Walla Walla. More water, bigger deeper longer runs, but I didn't fish, enjoyed watching the hunters and their dogs get lots birds.
I've been through the swegal road area with 4wt in warm weather, fair for trout, several years ago. Kinda stopped because I caught to many small ones with parr marks. There's good eating hatchery trout in the reservoir that time of year anyway.
