One of my close and longer tenured fishing buddies and I fished an Olympic Peninsula river on Sunday, March 10th. The weather was clear to start the morning but very cold (24 degrees) as we slipped the drift boat off the trailer into the slow moving, glacial green water. We fished the first couple runs with pink worms and beads under floats to no avail so we figured it would be a good idea to try running plugs through the spot we were working to possibly give them a longer look at our offering. It turned out to be a good call as the inside rod folded over half-way through the run, only to be shaken loose about 15 seconds into the fight. After refocusing we decided keep making our way downstream as we knew there was plenty of day and great water left in our drift. We spent the next several hours into the early afternoon plugging, drifting worms and beads and just landing a few resident trout. In the second to last run we plugged of the day, we again had a take down on the inside rod only to be shaken free a second time less than a minute into the fight. There seemed to be some fish in the system, having seen about a half dozen rollers during the day, but it just seemed like they were ‘shut off’ the day we were there. Having said that I would expect it to pick up with the next weather system we get not in the form of the white stuff!
