WOW spring has finally come after being locked in the icy grips of winter for the last couple of months. A warm sunny day with no wind fishing kokanee who could ask for more?
Friend Scott wanted to get his boat out for some water testing after having Precision Propeller re-set his motor height. What a difference it made! many motors on off shore brackets are mounted too low. Got to the water around 8 and the Honeysuckle parking lot was full. Seems everyone had the same idea after the ice went out earlier in the week. Ended up parking the trailer way up the road! Headed out through some early morning skim ice; sure makes weird noised on the boat hull. And oh yeh watch out for those bigger chunks of ice.
Located fish fairly deep and set the downriggers at 65'. Scott got the first one on an orange pink hoochie baited with Berkley gulp maggot. He then proceeded to loose a couple and then get a second. I set up mine at 45 on the wire and put out the famous three color lead core. No love so finally copied Scott on the downrigger and put the Moon Jelly Arrow Flash Dodger with my Cyclops spinner rig on the lead core. Finally got one on the downrigger and then the lead core woke up. It was around noon with bright sunshine who woulda thought. Managed to catch three on the lead core. When I cleaned the fish I found they had been feeding on the chronimid hatch. Yes those kokanee love bugs!
Ended up the day with seven in the boat; what a great day to be out enjoying a beautiful spring day and catching some kokanee. Next trip...Chelan Derby in a couple of weeks.
