Potholes Reservoir was packed with Tournament fishermen so we decided to go over to Soda, initially to see if we could catch some of the BIG trout that we know are in there (smokers). After fishing half a day with not even a bite we decided to switch up to Walleye for the afternoon. The day was beautiful with light winds, hazy sunshine, mid 70's and water temps in Soda at 53 towards the top of the lake where the canal comes in and about 57 at the outlet. The Walleye are spread out at all sorts of different depths and spots and fishing was slow but we finished with 6 eater sized Walleye and 2 small ones released (sorry no Walleye pic this time). As we were making our last pass for the day before heading out I hooked another of the infamous Soap Lake snags (Yes, be prepared if you fish this lake properly to get snagged up a LOT - just back down from the snag and it'll usually come clear). Then the snag started to move and man did it start to move, The fight was on and my heart began to race I imagined a Walleye of a lifetime. It didn't take long though to start to think this wasn't a Walleye it simply fought too hard. After a good 20 minutes, getting half spooled and the boat getting drug along about 200 yards I finally got a look at the fish. Picture attached ....... 24lb Carp! Gotta give this day 5 stars for the fight that fish put up. Yes it ended up in the fish disposal container at MarDon.

Have to admit carp are a lot of fun to catch and their fight rates quite high in my book. If our carp tasted like Japanese carp, yumm. ;-)

If you want to catch a bunch of those beasts a day head down to the Palouse River just above the Snake. Your arms will get so tired after a while. 6wt, canoe, Nantucket sleigh ride.
