Decided to try Whatcom for the first time. I launched from the South launch around 6am. Soon as I got the Hobie out past the buoy markers I dropped my line in the water. It was odd kokanee fishing with only 1 line in the water (Whatcom your 2-pole endorsement doesn't apply). Being in a Kayak, I actually put my other downrigger ball in the water to reduce the effect of spinning donuts on the water.

Anyway, started off with the line at 25 feet, and immediately got into a very nice cutthroat. No retention on them, so back in the water it went to swim away. On a side not, it seems like they could open up retention on them with a slot limit, something like Samish with the limit of 2 being over 14 inches, maybe add in that only 1 can be over 20. Population seems to have really rebounded. Spent the next bit fishing at 5 feet down as there were actually a lot of fish surfacing, even with the surface temp being 60. After a bit I dropped back down to 30 feet and finished off my day.

For the day I used a variety of the Elgin Fishing dodger blanks that I have taped, and a variety of Elgin Fishing God's Tooth Spoons. Pretty much everything I put in the water caught fish. There were a few that caught quicker than others (50/50 gold).

Wound up for the day catching 2 cutts that went probably somewhere between 16-18 inches. Very healthy fish. The kokanee were small, but that is what I expected. Fun morning, I am sure I will visit the lake again. Was nice that the weather with the clouds kept the hooligans off the water for me :)

Great report and video as usual! Congrats on another koke limit and nice to have a few cutts thrown in for bonus action :-)

Thanks Russ! The kokanee there are definitely on the small side, but the occasional big cut is a nice change of pace waiting for a koke to hop on :)

Cool. I live across the street from Lake Whatcom. I'll have to hit it.
thanks
