My dad and I met his friend over at the Potholes around 9am Friday Morning. We go over there a couple times a year, and having been fishing there since I was a kid (I'm 32 now, so its been a while). My dad has always been talking about how we should be Walleye fishing (as opposed to the Bass/crappie/perch fishing we normally do), and ever since he caught his first one on our last trip...its all he could talk about for this one.
The only Walleye I ever caught was by accident (fishing for Smallmouth), and it was about 15 inches, so thinking of trolling all day for 1 fish wasn't too exciting for me.
Well, we got our gear together and headed out around Goose Island out on the Pot Holes. The water was really dingy (pretty important from what I understand), and after trolling for maybe 20 min I caught my first fish - about an 18 inch Walleye (just legal). Pretty excited, we both set our lines out - and about 20 min later I got hung up on something big - damn....well, the thing started pulling back. As it got closer to the boat, I told my dad "I'm serious this time, this thing is big". About a 20 minute fight - I land a 10lb Walleye !! It was so big, it was too big for our net ! I'll try to upload a picture in case you think this is a 'fishin tale', but look at Mar Dons once they update their site (We thought I might have caught a record .. word of advice, never weigh the real big ones!).
We caught 1 more Walleye that day, and our friend caught another Walleye. We also caught a decent sized trout and a few smallmouth.
Went out the next day (9/14/02), and the water was a little clear - and didn't catch anything but little bass you could use for bait. Didn't see any get caught either.
For those interested, the water was real dingy, and I had on a bright orange 'Double Wammy' with a big nightcrawler hooked to it (its now my favorite lure, I slept with it under my pillow so none of the guys would steal it in the night).
As I said we've been going here for years, and it seems that September is the best time to catch fish - the only problem is if the water gets too low (like now), you can't get back to the Dunes to catch them bass ..... but I'm not complaining this time !
