Hey folks! I just wanted to give a report on the John Day Pool walleye fishing for the last week or so. I have been busy and on the water every day. The fishing overall has been a bit tougher then the last few years! One of the problems is the increased pressure we are seeing from walleye anglers due to no other fisheries really being available for the anglers! This year we have no summer Chinook season and no sockeye season. That increases the angling effort on our walleye fisheries. The flows coming through the dams are also a big factor this year. The new legislation that aims at "flushing" the salmon to sea makes getting on a consistent walleye bite next to impossible. Regardless, we cannot control either of those things so we just have to go fish and do our best to get on the walleye. We are averaging 10-20 fish/day, but are finding some really nice sized fish in the 2-4 lb. range. Plugs and harnesses in deeper water 30-40 feet have been our go to techniques. As the summer continues, we will keep walleye fishing and also offer catch and release sturgeon trips as we wait for those fall kings to start coming in.
