Day Two Zeballos report: "We can't get to the coho because of all the kings!"
Well… if I thought it could get any better…I was wrong. Today was about the most amazing chinook fishing I have ever been a part of.
We pulled away from the dock at 6am and into a thick fog bank, totally unlike yesterday. The water was glassy smooth though and after a pleasant 30 minute run we arrived at the fishing grounds. Same drill, drop a flasher, 6 foot leader, and thin blade spoon or Old Goat lure down just off the bottom. Troll around 2.5mph, wait a few minutes and - BAMM – fish on!
From 6 to 9am the bite was steady with a few doubles in the mix. We hit fish off the bottom, fish suspended, and fish in the top 30 feet. The chinooks were a tad smaller than yesterday – our biggest was probably in the 18 pound range. That said, the sheer abundance of chinook salmon was unreal. As we approached our chinook limit we attempted to target the coho that are here (early, BTW). But get this – it was hard to get through the chinook to find the coho. I bet you don’t hear that too often.
Anyway, we had our boat limits by around 9am and caught and released a bunch of chinook in our quest to find some coho. Around noon we decided to call it a day and get back to the lodge for an early day.
After a rejuvenating shower we explored some of the sights around Zeballos, then enjoyed another deliscious dinner by the Reel Obsession Loge chef Billy.
Tomorrow we move on to halibut!
