We had a group outing with 3 boats and a bunch of guys from work. We all launched out of Porcupine Bay and headed to various parts of the Arm. I had two buddies with me and we initially targeted weed beds but the bite was pretty slow so we went off to troll. I targeted the main river channel, up near buoy 5, trolling a couple of smiley blades and an Indiana bladed slow death hook combo.

Within the first 100' we had our first fish. Initially it looked like my buddy was snagged because I could see the drag was being pulled but after I checked the rod for him I said no its a fish. I was thinking a big carp because I knew it was a big fish but when we actually saw the fish it turned out to be an 11 lb. eye. That will probably be the biggest walleye he ever sees much less catches. My job was done for the day.

Actually we continued to troll in the same area and picked up a few more eaters between 15-17 inches. 30-35 FOW turned out to be the best depth. When trolling slowed down we targeted weed beds with jigs. Overall the fishing was low but based on the hundreds of 2-3 inch perch I saw swimming everywhere I can see why it is slow. It can be hard to compete with mother nature.

All told we caught at least 30 eyes and kept 14 eaters between 15 and 21 inches. I gave the day a 5 mainly because it was great to see my buddy catch the fish of a lifetime. By the way we ended up with the best overall catch of eyes especially when it came to size. Go Pack Go!
