Last Friday I went out with a friend on his boat just south of Blake Island. We had been catching Coho in this area before, so we knew there were fish in the area, and were waiting for the big ocean fish to come in. We started fishing at around 7, and it couldn't have been more than 30 seconds after I put the rod down for the first time and went to set up the other downrigger that the first fish hit! This was a smaller resident Coho, but it didn't take long to find the bigger ocean fish and shortly afterwards, a big fish hit that almost pulled the rod out of the holder! This was one of the biggest Coho I have ever seen, and within 3 hours, we had 2 more fish in the boat and had our limits and headed home! As a general rule, I prefer to use trolling flies for Coho, as these match the hatch better than hoochies in my opinion. The gear that we used was as follows:
Hot Spot Flasher Purple Haze
Grand Slam Bucktail 4-inch Needlefish Purple Haze
Pro-troll ProChip 11" flasher Green
Danielson green/white herring fly
Silver Horde Ace-Hi Fly green spatter back
