We had a small family meet up at Les Davis Fishing Pier. I, of course, wanted to fish for squid. I didn’t have high hopes but we all got out of our houses and the younger cousins could see each other. The sun was out with zero chance of rain. BUT I didn’t see the small craft advisory. This meant it was windy. I don’t know what the wind chill was but everyone got cold. Except the boys, they ran all over the dock.
I was fishing the incoming tide. We got their around 2pm and left just before 5pm.
There weren’t many people fishing. I did see two at the end of the dock unhook a squid each. More tourist than those fishing on the dock today. But I gave it a good try. Cast out let it go to the bottom and reel and jig it in. I thought I had some debris from the bottom and I yelled to the family “I got something”. They came over to look at what I got. A squid! Well I was over the moon. To me that single squid was like catching a 25 pound salmon!

Squid, for me is the fish of 10,000 casts. It took 3 years to catch 1. Then that year I only got a few. That is why it is like a 25 pound salmon.

Squid hasnt been great at des moines either. Crowded due to the redondo closure, So far ive caught 3 lbs once, 3 squid once, and 2 total skunks! Ive seen some limits online recently, some from boaters with good fish finders.

hey wait a second..... Im a boater, your a boater...... Pretty sure we both have high tech fish finders..... Why arent we just launching our boats and going after the squid, instead of waiting for the squid to come to us? Parking a boat trailer at night might be a problem, (rarely had any luck daytime squidding btw) Gonna have to give this a little more thought..... boat, fish finder, bright lights, warm heater......
