This is a 2 day report from a relatively new fisherman to this lake. I’ve been 3 times previous, once with a guide and only caught a couple trout. Heard it’s been ok for both Kokanee and trout so my dad and I gave it a try.
Thursday 1/2/2020 we launched and Spring Canyon fish all day and no bites. Rapalas, assortments of blades and spinners, homemade flies, etc. All colors. Side planers were used too. Not 1 bite. Decided next day to run up to Kellers Ferry.
1/3/2020 Going to launch at Spring Canyon but too windy. Drove to Keller’s Ferry (Fog wasn’t fun) and debated on fishing since wind was strong. Decided to fish and started around 10 am. Used everything again but today we could do no wrong. 15 rainbows (3 hatchery) were caught. My dad caught 2-3lb Kokanee. Wanted to catch more Kokanee but they weren’t cooperating for us (I’ve never caught one here). Side planers and down riggers were used. Down riggers set between 10-15 feet deep. Jointed Rapalas (orange and chartreuse) kept us busy.
We tried to troll 1.3-1.8 mph early but wind had the advantage. We noticed we only got hits going with the wind and were mostly moving 1.8-2.3mph. So we kept running up and trolling down to not fight the wind as bad. Worked for us on this day. Wind slowed later in day and 1.7-1.8 was what kept fish biting.
Learning this lake and hope to return with better knowledge and strategy to catch the Kokanee. Strong fish and great table fare. But I’m not complaining. I was fishing!
